Abhijith Ajayaghosh

Currently a medical student, Abhijith has been drawn to the interplay of colour and light in conveying emotion and narrative within a photograph. His journey into photography commenced during his early teenage years when he acquired his first mobile phone.

He embraced the fundamentals of colour, composition, and light, which laid the roundwork for his evolution as a photographer. Abhijith aims to craft immersive experiences through photography that evoke emotions through the use of colour and light.

Inspiration

“My inspiration for my work lies in cinema and how a still from a film can carry so much story and emotion within just one still frame. I have always had an avid fascination for this and have tried to study filmmaking and its techniques to further improve my photography. Such as colour grading, composition and using natural light to my benefit. Prior to taking a photograph I have always liked to compose a sort of narrative in my head and imagine I am watching a film of the environment i see before me. Then I try to take the shot specifically so said scene would meet the “film” I have in my mind. Almost as if I am just a vessel for my imagination to be turned into a reality.”

THE MAN ON THE TRAIN, 2019
(80cm x 40cm), Print on Canvas, £395
“In my photograph of the Man on the Train, I was trying to capture that feeling “Sonder”, the profound feeling of realising everyone’s life is complex as our own, which they are living despite our lack of awareness of it. As I was coming back from a trip to a place called Hogenakkal in Tamil Nadu, I honestly felt inspired by the bustling and busyness of the train station and the evening sun that was basking it all in a golden glow. As I started taking general photos just to document my trip I felt drawn to a few people that were almost still amidst all of this chaos, leading me to have that sonder-like feeling. In that moment I wanted to capture them as if it was a singular frame from a movie of their lives.”
