Rashmi Gunathilaka

Rashmi Gunathilaka is a Sri-Lankan artist who lives and works in London. While his education spans both architecture and various forms of fine art, he is primarily a painter who’s work encompasses a variety of mixed media. His emphasis on flowing brushwork, rich colours and malleability in form is used to realise a variety of compositions, often with human figures at their core. The fluidity of style renders these central characters as if they were a dreamlike suggestion of the mind, that convey the essence of the subtle emotions freely intermingling to produce a rich stylistic texture. While his work is often a means of self inquiry and reflection, it is also an invitation to the viewer to place themselves within the frame and explore that same kaleidoscopic range of emotion.

To The Very Ends, 2024,(100cm x 100cm), Acrylic on Canvas - £575
‘To The Very Ends’ is an art piece that vividly depicts a tense fight between a figure and a lion against a striking bold background. The figures are portrayed in a captivating tug-of-war imagery, symbolizing the struggle between the lion and the figure. The painting's core message revolves around exploring the notion of belonging to a place.
The lion holds particular significance as it represents the Sri Lankan flag, with its eyes painted in green and orange, set against a bright red background reminiscent of the national flag's colours. The character in the painting is seen bravely fending off the lion. Overall, the painting serves as a thought-provoking conversation starter, prompting us to reflect on the preservation of our identity and how deeply we embody it.
